What Is a Cystoscopy?
A cystoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that allows a urologist to examine the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible instrument called a cystoscope. Equipped with a small camera and light, the cystoscope provides a clear, detailed view of the urinary tract that cannot be seen with imaging tests alone. Cystoscopy is commonly used to investigate urinary symptoms, diagnose underlying conditions, monitor certain urologic disorders, and guide treatment decisions.
At Modern Urology, board-certified urologist Dr. Adam De Fazio uses cystoscopy as part of a comprehensive approach to evaluating urinary tract health. Whether you're experiencing blood in your urine, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), painful urination, or other persistent urinary concerns, cystoscopy can provide valuable information to help identify the cause of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan.
How Is a Cystoscopy Performed?
In most cases, cystoscopies are performed conveniently in our Miami, FL urology office and take only about 10–20 minutes to complete. Before the procedure begins, a numbing gel is applied to the urethra to help maximize your comfort. Once the area is numb, Dr. De Fazio carefully inserts the flexible cystoscope through the urethra and into the bladder.
As the cystoscope advances, sterile fluid may be used to gently fill the bladder, allowing the lining of the bladder and urinary tract to be viewed more clearly. During the examination, Dr. De Fazio carefully evaluates the bladder, urethra, and surrounding structures for signs of inflammation, bladder stones, tumors, strictures, enlarged prostate changes, or other abnormalities that may be contributing to your symptoms. Most patients experience only mild pressure or a temporary sensation of needing to urinate during the procedure.
What Are the Benefits of Cystoscopy?
While imaging studies and laboratory testing provide valuable information, cystoscopy allows us to directly examine the urinary tract for a more complete evaluation. This detailed visualization often leads to earlier diagnosis, more accurate treatment planning, and greater confidence in identifying the source of urinary symptoms. Some of the most important advantages of cystoscopy include:
- Provides a detailed view of the bladder and urethra
- Helps identify the cause of persistent urinary symptoms
- Detects abnormalities that may not appear on imaging studies
- Supports early diagnosis of bladder conditions
- Guides personalized treatment planning
- Performed in the office with little downtime
- May allow certain conditions to be diagnosed and treated during the same procedure
Because every patient's symptoms and medical history are different, cystoscopy is often one part of a comprehensive urologic evaluation. The information gathered during the procedure helps Dr. De Fazio recommend the most appropriate next steps to protect your urinary health and improve your quality of life.

Tengo la mejor opinión del staff y del dr José Vilaro por el trato tan respetuoso y profesional y los que lean este mensaje les digo que este servicio es excelente, por lo que no duden en asistir al mismo.Gracias.
Very grateful especially to Dr. Vilaro, after 10 years of suffering from pain due to kidney stones, he was the only one who gave the solution to my problem, in addition to being a good professional, he is an incredible human being. May God continue to bless you to give the best to your patients. I rarely recommend someone, this is the exception, I recommend this clinic a thousand times and especially Dr. Vilaro.
I don't typically write reviews on Google, but Dr. Vilaro absolutely deserves an exception, and I only wish I'd done this sooner. From the moment I first saw him, it was clear that he was the embodiment of patience and empathy. He took the time to carefully listen to my symptoms, no matter how abrupt or complex, and made sure I fully understood every possible course of treatment by writing things out and diagramming them. Although my symptoms weren't pathogenic and couldn't be treated immediately, Dr. Vilaro went above and beyond by referring me to the right specialists, who are now providing excellent care. I’m truly grateful for his thoughtful and thorough approach.
